Ask us anything you like!

WHAT ARE THE BOATS LIKE?
We use traditional Turkish-made Gulets for our sailing tours in all destinations. Our boats are all designed to maximize lounging space on the outdoor decks in order to enjoy the beautiful views of the bays and turquoise waters of the Turkish Mediterranean in comfort. All of our cabins are en-suite with a decent sized bathroom. Most people are surprised at how big the bathroom is, and is comparable to a hotel room bathroom as opposed to a boat one. Our common areas on the Gulets are plentiful and large. There is a lot of space on the different decks to relax, chat with your fellow travelers, play games, read your book, sunbathe, nap, or simply gaze out at the stunning views with a drink in hand.
IS THERE FREE WIFI ON BOARD?
Yes, All of our boats have free wifi onboard so that you can stay connected to the world and share your fabulous photos from your sailing tour on the gram.
IS THERE A BAR ON OUR BOAT?
There sure is, all of our boats have a licensed bar on board. Prices are very reasonable however, not ridiculously cheap, like food, due to some higher alcohol taxes in Turkey. We have a bar tab that is run throughout the week for convenience, with payment of the tab due at the end of the tour. You will fix your tab at the end of the trip directly with the boat’s bar staff in cash. We will make sure you have access to bank machines prior to having to settle your bill. From previous experience all over the world, we do recommend checking your bar tab each day to make sure you don't have any surprises at the end of the tour. Since there is a licensed bar on board, BYO drinks are not to be brought on board with you. If there is anything you particularly want to drink on your sailing week please let us know in advance and we will make sure we source it for you prior to sailing.
WHAT POWER SOCKETS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE BOAT?
All power sockets in Turkey are European style. On our boats we also use European sockets (2 hole prongs), so you will need to bring an international conversion adapter to use your electronics if you don't live in Europe.
HOW MANY HOURS A DAY WILL WE BE CRUISING?
Besides swim stops, we cruise roughly 3-4 hrs every day but on some days we will cruise further and other days less. Occasionally, we may begin cruising at sunrise to cover some miles while you are still sleeping.
WHERE WILL WE DOCK ?
After a day of exploring the sights along the coast and several swim stops, most nights we anchor up in pristine bays for sunset swims and dinner under the stars. Sometimes we may dock up in a marina, for example in Kas to allow us to go ashore in the evening and enjoy the splendid fishing village and her nightlife.
DO I GET SEASICK?
In general, the Turkish coastline is relatively calm. Most of the time it feels like you are sailing on a lake. Most of the time it's like sailing on a large lake but rarely it may get a little rough. If you do usually get seasick we recommend bringing some seasickness tablets with you. There are also seasick pressure point wrist bands which are quite useful.
WHAT IF WE GET BAD WEATHER?
As we sail in the summer season, it's rare that we have bad weather. However, if the seas are too rough on any given day, our experienced captains carefully plan out an alternate route to avoid them. We may change up the itinerary to ensure the most pleasurable and safe experience on board by avoiding any bad weather.
HOW MANY OTHER PASSENGERS ON THE TOUR?
Most gulets in Turkey have 16 passengers capacity. So our group size is generally between 12-16 passengers per boat. Sometimes in high season, we will have many gulets traveling in a flotilla ( both from our company and others) and we can meet up with the other guests at swim Stops and local villages.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?
• All drinks are not included and are sold on board at very reasonable prices. Please do not bring your own drinks on board. Water is included with every meal and Coffee and Tea are available for free during breakfast and Afternoon Tea time. • Archaeological sites and national parks entrance fees. • Tips for the Crew

WHAT DOES A DAY ONBOARD LOOK LIKE?
Please see our website link LIFE ONBOARD or read our travel blog post entitled ‘What To Expect And What To Bring On Your Sailing Week In Turkey With Ava Sail’ for more information. Our day always starts with a fresh Turkish breakfast which is usually being served from 8:00-09:00 am. This can sometimes be earlier or later depending on the day's activities. Occasionally, our boat starts cruising before breakfast but we always have breakfast in a pristine bay. Swim stops are scheduled before and after lunch which is served around 1:30 pm each day. But remember we are generally in amazing bays so any stop can actually be a swim stop. It depends on how much you love swimming!! When we dock in the towns and villages you will have free time. Our crew will give you tips about the best things to do. There can be an optional excursion organized for you which our crew will coordinate with you on the day. You then can meet back with our group for Dinner on board which is usually around 7:30 pm, followed by some games on the boat, and sometimes when we dock in the towns we enjoy night outs to enjoy the local nightlife. Every day you will be informed by our friendly crew about the schedule of the day and you can always ask questions anytime if you’re not sure.
WHEN DO THE TOURS START AND FINISH?
Our tours begin on Saturday afternoon. Please come to our office anytime before 2:00 pm to fill in/confirm some paperwork that is required for check-in. We will embark on our gulet at 3:00 pm. We will check out and leave the gulet the following Saturday after breakfast at 9:30 am. You can depart earlier if you have an early flight as we are in port already.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE AGE OF PASSENGERS ON TOUR?
Our passengers are all like-minded, fun loving, adventurous travellers who appreciate the champagne lifestyle on the beer budget. Many are in their early 20s ranging up to their late 40s with an average of 55% solo travelers. Don't worry if you’re outside of that age range, as most of our travellers are cool young souls and are here for the same reason; to relax, unwind and enjoy local experiences with new friends with a bit of affordable stylish luxury thrown in. Our passengers have generally grown out of the hostel room way of traveling and want something a little more comfortable so are prepared to spend a little bit more to get a lot more bang for the buck. Our guests want value for money but don't want the cheapest gulet on the sea. Avasail caters to those discerning tastes.
IS THIS TOUR RECOMMENDED FOR SOLO TRAVELERS?
Traveling solo is an amazing and invigorating experience, it is a great idea to book a group tour to meet new people and cultures and share amazing experiences with possible future lifelong friends. Whether you want to get out and explore the amazing seaside towns or chill onboard with a sunset cocktail or go for a night out there’s always a great mix of people on board to share those experiences with.
AS A SOLO TRAVELER, WHO WILL I BE SHARING WITH?
Our prices are based on two people sharing a twin or double cabin, so if you’re traveling solo, you will be paired with another same-sex traveler. We will never make you share a room with someone of the opposite sex. If you would like to upgrade to a single cabin, there is a possibility to pay a single supplement fee but please contact us to check availability first.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN OUR SAILING TOUR?
For a full list of inclusions, please check out the details of our tours individually. As general information the tour price and fees cover the following services: • Seven nights in an en-suite cabin (twin or double) on a motorized cruising gulet. • All meals including Afternoon Tea everyday (coffee, tea, and snacks) • Snorkeling equipment is also available to use and there is a music system with speakers that we can all connect to with our playlists. • Harbour and marina fees • Free Water • Local qualified captain and crew • Free wifi onboard and some Board games ( Backgammon for sure!)
ARE THERE OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS ON OFFER?
Yes, there are some amazing optional excursions on offer. Paragliding over the World famous Blue Lagoon and Scuba diving at Kaş is the most popular extra activity. The costs for those excursions are not included in your tour cost & are payable to the crew on board during the tour. When you make your booking, you will get a list of the optional excursions that you can also pre-book online with us due to those activities being very popular and likely to sell out. If you have further travel plans when in Turkey, let us know and we'll do our best to give you the best deals and ensure you get the chance to tick other sites in Turkey off your bucket list. We can organize pre or post-tours to Cappadocia.
DO YOU CATER FOR SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS ONBOARD?
We have an exclusive chef on board with us for the duration of the journey and they will make sure you have the best meals on your tour. We can cater to special dietary requirements. Let us know of your dietary requirement when you make your booking and remind us again on day 1 when checking in. Some of the products that you can easily find in your home countries might not be available in Turkey. If you have a very specific or unusual requirement and want to make sure, then please check with us before the tour. Generally, we can easily cater FOR vegetarians, vegans, Gluten-free, Lactose-Free, and Keto diets.
ARE TOWELS PROVIDED?
Yes bath towels are provided. As you are on a boat and will be spending a lot of time on the deck and in the water you can never have enough towels., we recommended getting yourself a Turkish Towel from the markets. Handy Tip: Get a unique colour or design so you know which towel is yours!
DO WE HAVE AIR-CONDITIONING ONBOARD?
We are able to use the air conditioning for several hours per day but due to Turkey's rules and regulations we can not keep a generator on all night so when we are not connected to shore power which is most nights the air conditioning will not be on. We usually cool down the rooms before bed and we have come up with many helpful ways for keeping cool on very hot nights.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR THE TOUR?
As all meals are included on our tours, you won’t spend much on food unless you crave some snacks when you are walking around in the towns and of course for the Gozleme boat. Make sure you always have 1 or 2 euros for the delicious Turkish ice cream. When we go out and enjoy the nightlife in the local towns you may need to bring some cash with you. Drinks are generally reasonable in Turkey. Beers generally are 2-3 euros, nice cocktails approximately 5-7 euros. There is also a bar on board the boat that enables you to enjoy reasonably priced drinks for the entire week. A bar tab is run on the boat for the week and you pay in cash at the end of the week. You can and should keep track as you go. As a rough estimate for your bar tab on board, €100 Euro for the week would get you a beer/wine at lunch and dinner, some drinks in the afternoon on the sun deck, and then pre-drinks before night outs, for the 7 days while on the boat. If you choose to do any of the optional excursions that are offered then you will need to budget for these. To do everything, that would cost roughly €150 - 180 per person. These prices are just a rough guide as excursion prices change from season to season and there are currency fluctuations.
WHAT ABOUT TIPPING THE CREW?
Tipping is customary in Turkey but it’s not compulsory and it's entirely up to you if you decide to give extra to the crew. It is very much appreciated by the crew. You will see how hard the crew works all week to ensure you have an amazing week on our tours. Tipping is a good way to show your gratitude to our crew at the end of the tour. The amount you tip is totally your own decision, however we recommend 20 Euro per crew member for the week.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
You should pack light for a week-long tour on the seas. The weather during the summer is on average 28-35 C (83-95 F), so you definitely don’t need jeans or a thick sweater to keep you warm. The dress code for the nightlife in Turkey is very relaxed. A casual summer outfit is acceptable at bars and clubs. You will need sunscreen, swimwear, beach towels, and hats. The sun can be very strong especially in July and August. Our gulets have quite a few inflatables and snorkeling gear to share but it is always more hygienic to bring yours.
DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?
We strongly advise that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance before your trip starts. Our team will require your travel insurance details including policy number and 24-hour emergency contact details on check-in. It is even better and will save you time if you send us this information before you arrive in Turkey.
WHAT CURRENCY DO THEY USE IN TURKEY?
Turkey’s official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY) however, in most tourist destinations Euro and USD are widely accepted at a rate stated by the shop owner, usually with the change given in Turkish Lira. Beware when paying with large notes as you will get all your change in Turkish Lira and you won't want to have to convert it back. Currency exchange can be found at the airport and at the main port in Fethiye. Exchange rates are always better in the town. Alternatively, ATM machines are available throughout Turkey to use your own Cash Card. It is always handy to have Turkish lira with you to get better deals in shopping places.
DO I NEED A VISA TO COME TO TURKEY?
You can obtain your visa after filling in the necessary information online. You will be asked questions about your identity, your passport, and your travel dates. You can then pay the visa fee online. Tourist visas are usually issued for 90 days and vary in cost depending on which country your passport is from. Some countries' passports do not require a Visa and they can enter the country for free. Check it out online if you need a visa. Some nations can also obtain a Visa at the airport, however, the cost is generally higher. AvaSail does not take any responsibility or have any obligation to assist with you obtaining your Visa but if we can help then we will.
IS IT SAFE TO DRINK TAP WATER IN TURKEY?
Tap water in Turkey is generally considered safe to drink, but as a precaution against stomach upsets from different bugs and bacteria that you may not be used to, we always recommend drinking bottled water. Bottled water is very cheap in Turkey and is available from shops, hotels, and restaurants throughout Turkey.
WHAT IF I GET SICK IN TURKEY?
Turkey has a very highly regarded medical system and you will be well looked after if you need any medical attention whilst in Turkey. Medicines are quite widely available in pharmacies if you need any extra medications while you are here.
WHAT ABOUT MOBILE PHONES AND DATA?
We recommend getting a Turkish sim card for the duration of your stay in Turkey. That way you will have lots of your own data available to use and stay in touch. It is cheap and easy to do at a number of shops in town. We can point you in the right direction. If you are using your data roaming be aware as sometimes those charges can be pretty high. It is always best to check what your own mobile phone charges are before using it and racking up a huge bill.
WHAT LANGUAGE DO THEY SPEAK IN TURKEY?
In Turkey the locals speak Turkish, however, the tourism industry has expanded a lot over the last couple of decades. English is widely spoken in tourist destinations, especially by the young Turks. Some basic Turkish phrases can be very useful for breaking the ice and always gaining an extra smile from the locals :)
HOW IS THE TIPPING CULTURE IN TURKEY?
Tipping is expected in Turkey and leaving a 10% tip on your bill in a restaurant is generally an acceptable amount. Tour guides and crew on land tours should also be tipped around 10 Euro per crew member, per day. As already mentioned for our gulet cruises we recommend 20 Euro per crew member for the week.
WHAT DO THINGS COST IN TURKEY?
Although Turkey is a popular tourist destination, major cities and ports have remained cheap for the average traveler. Snacks from street vendors can normally be purchased for just a few Euros while a meal in a restaurant with a drink won’t cost much more than 10 Euros. Taxis have a base fare of 1 Euro and then cost one extra dollar per kilometer. Buses are extremely cheap. Accommodation is very varied and generally of a very high standard. You get a lot of value for Money in Turkey.
